Trick or Treat........ Now only 24 days away!!!

Originally named as “All-Hallows-Eve”, Halloween started around 2000 years ago in the area which is now Ireland. Celts (people from ancient Roman times) celebrate this day because it’s the end of summer with the dark cold winter soon to come. Celts believed that on the night before November 1 ghosts of the dead returned to earth.

Trick or treat is a customary practice for children on Halloween in many countries. Parents and Children go to great measures to bring the spirit of Halloween into their homes by decorating their houses with cotton spider webs, devil sticks, skeletons costumes, helping to make their house appear hunted, others just have a pumpkin basket filled with sweet candy treats.

Did you know? One quarter of the all the candy sold annually in the U.S is purchased for Halloween

With only 24 days away until Halloween, Pink Poppy has some fantastic costumes suitable for boys and girls. Visit your favourite Pink Poppy stockist and ask for the spooky ghost cape, the scary red spider cape, the deadly bat hooded cape, and the red devil hooded cape with horns.

Halloween is not all about scary and spooky, you could be on the good side and defeat the bad. Pink Poppy also have available the wise wizard and witch’s capes with a matching hats.
With so much fun just around the corner let us know which Pink Poppy outfit you will be wearing this Halloween.

It's Spring - let's go outside!

Finally, the sun is shining a little more and the days feel brighter.  It's time to have some outside fun again.

Go Camping - Pack up your sleeping bag and tent and head out for a camping trip ..... in your backyard!  Spending the night outside under the stars will be an awesome adventure, plus your whole family can join in.  You will need:
  • snacks to munch on
  • a ball to throw around while it's still light
  • board games, books and magazines
  • your portable DVD player so you can have a moonlight cinema
  • don't forget your torch for telling ghost stories when it's dark - or in case you get the spooks in the middle of the night!
Plant a veggie garden - get your green thumbs out and create a veggis patch in your backyard.  all you need is a patch of soil, a shovel and a few packets of seeds.  Hint:  make sure the spot you choose is sunny and pull out any weeds first.  Water your seeds according to the instructions on the packet and before long you'll have a bunch of delish veggies ready for you to pick and eat.  Cool!

Sports Carnival - get active and plan a super silly sports day!  Divide your mates into teams and plan a fun carnival where each team has to compete in a bunch of events to decide the overall winner.  Think of the wackiest sports you can and then plan around six events for everyone to compete in over the day.  Give each team a name and a colour, and get everyone to dress up in their team colours.  Don't forget to keep score too, and award a prize to the winning team!  Silly sports to try ...
  • piggy back races
  • dance off ( points awarded for creativity and funniest moves)
  • three-legged race
  • hopscotch
  • wheelbarrow races
Hold a pet show - invite your pals over for a Pet Show in your backyard.  (Note: ask your parents first and only invite pets if you think they will get along with other animals!)  Lay down a couple of towels on the grass to make a 'pets catwalk'and get each person to walk their pet along the catwalk.  Then, get together and nominate an award for each pet.  You can give whichever awards you like, from Cutest Bark to Fluffiest Pet, but make sure each cute animal gets an award so no one feels left out.

Show me the Money!! 5 steps by Kidpreneur founder

Five steps to success, by Business Guru and Club Kidpreneur founder, Creel Price.

1.  Play to your strengths - If you are a creative then consider something that uses these talents, like selling hand drawn cards.  If you are a good cook then make something that people love to eat.
2.  Do what you enjoy - Business can take a while to be successful and can take a lot of hard work.  If you start a business in something you like doing, then you will be more likely to follow through to the stage where you are making some money.
3.  Conduct research - Before you start your business, find out if people would buy your product and how much they would be willing to pay for it.  Look at what other similar companies offer and how you can make it cheaprer or faster.
4.  Ask for help - don't be afraid to ask for advice.  Test your ideas on your friends and family.
5.  Start Small - don't pay huge expenses until you have trialled whether people will buy your products or services, whether of not you can make money, and most importantly, whether you like doing it.

Buck-making ideas:
  • Make and sell greeting cards
  • Plant or tend a garden for your neighbours
  • Bake and sell cookies
  • Help with laundry
  • Consider pet sitting (and feeding!) or dog walking
  • Car washing
  • Footpath or verandah sweeping

Find a Fairy in your garden

The best way to find a fairy in your garden is to invite them in!  You need to make your garden fairy-friendly.  Make sure there are lots of flowers, trees and plants for them to play in.  They also love water, so if you have a pool or pond, you're extra lucky.

Be positive.  Fairies will only befriend humans who believe in them.  And look in the right places.  Did you know that dawn and dusk are the best times to spot one?

You could also bake up some sweet treats like cookies and cupcakes and hold a fairy picnic.  Fairies are known to have a sweet tooth so they'll want to join in!  You could also leave some of your best drawings out for them to look at - fairies love art too!

Tell Pink Poppy what you could do if you found a fairy in your garden!

Hair Clip in, hair clip out ....

Why do 3 year olds demand they have a hair clip, only to slide it off within 2 mins?  I bought my niece some pink clips with a fluffy pom-pom type ball with a couple of sparkly stones on it.  It is very cute and her eyes lit up when she saw it.  Immediately she wanted it in her hair, but it lasted only minutes.  The real attraction was the bending, clipping motion of the metal clip.  That was fun.  She opened and closed it for ages.

Then I found the clips on the floor and put it in my own hair so they wouldn't be lost.  No, that wasn't acceptable.  They were her clips now and not mine.  What right did I have to use her clips?  And so the dance continued.  The clicking, in hair, out of hair, on floor, in my hair again.

I love the drama of doing her hair.  The tiny brush, the fine golden hair that is so soft to touch, the art of placing plaits and pony tails were ever she wants them.  And the final result of multiple clips, ties and headbands that give her Rock Princess cred.  I don't have this with my sons.

The clips finally found a home in her handbag with a toy lizard, two blocks and a tiny book.  At what age do they finally decide to keep the clips in their hair??

The Rainbow Connection - What does your favourite colour say about you?

RED - Reow!  You're fun, fiery and have a whole lot of spark.  You can be a bit of a drama queen, but your pals love you for being you.  You have strong opinions, so you're not afraid to speak your mind if the time is right.  While you are outgoing, you have a caring side too.

PINK - You're a vibrant young spirit who is gorgeous and girly.  You have the fire of red girls, but also possess a sweet softness that makes you ultra charming to friends and family.  Now and again you catch yourself daydreaming and you love a little dose of romance here and there.  You're a happy soul - truly tickled pink!

YELLOW - Bubbly, bright and just bursting with positive energy, yellow girls are loved by many.  You have an uber-awesome attitude and don't like it when others are down in the dumps.  Just because you have a sunny disposition, doesn't mean you're one dimensional.  You're quirky, creative and oh so cute.

BLUE - Your besties can always count on you because, like the blue sky and sea, you're always there.  You're a strong sista who loves to socialise, but you also like some time alone too.  While you love blue, you don't often have the blues.  Instead, you like to be pretty practical in everything you do.

GREEN - You're a pretty chilled out chica who has a variety of fab friends.  You have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge, which weaves its way through different parts of your life.  An old soul at heart, you find comfort in the little things - a cup of tea or a good book.  As a green girl you naturally love all things eco-friendly too.

PURPLE - As a purple girl, you don't have to try to be popular.  People naturally gravitate towards that indefinable cool factor that circulates around you.  You're lovable and loyal, so friends flock to you for advice.  You're like a party mix of lollies - an eensy bit mysterious combined with a whole lot of fun!

Do you find it hard to keep up at school?

Are you unhappy with your grades, but don't really understand where you're going wrong?  Don't fret, there might be a number of reasons why your homework suffers; maybe you need some help trying to understand the subject properly or perhaps you find it hard to concentrate.  Whatever the issue, read ahead for some simple solutions.

You find a subject really tricky - Pinpoint the subject or area that you find the most difficult, and let your teacher know that you're finding it hard to keep up. Ask for additional homework (practice makes perfect, remember?) and get yourself a tutor to get on track.  A little extra effort will make all the difference and you'll find school a lot easier to tackle.

Homework is boring with a capital B and you're easily distracted - When you're at home, rid yourself of distractions like a blaring TV in the background.  Write a list of what homework needs to be finished each week and give yourself a reward for getting each task done.  Bonus tip:  Make sure you eat a healthy snack beforehand so you can concentrate while you study.

You can ever get organised and keep falling behind - Make a timetable for homework and assignments, and write down the due date for all of them.  It might be a good idea to get a diary so you can jot down anything you have coming up over the following weeks.  Another tip to keep organised is to use a folder to store any loose sheets so you don't lose them.

Cat got your tongue in class - If you are afraid of talking in front of your fellow class members, just remember that no-one will make fun of you and your teacher will appreciate any input you have.  Public speaking can be scary, so if you have a speech coming up, the key is to practice it in front of family members so you can spot any stumbles in advance.  And lastly, take deep breaths to calm you down.

Of course these items can be combined with Pink Poppys range of jewellery and hair accessories to create the perfect princess look.

Kindy BFF's - what are you bringing to the cartel?

Starting school is a huge milestone for parents and your child.  Nearing the end of Term 1, here are some observations I have made about my little ones habits at developing friendships and his approach to kindy.

1.  Friends - my child has become BFF with two other children.  He says he is friends with everyone in his class, even some girls.  But these two mates are all he talks about and he can't wait to get to school to see them.
2. Cartel - the three friends have devised ways of convinving their parents to provide three treats for morning tea.  It appears 3 lolly snakes can build unshakable friendships in kindy.
3.  News day - photos, favourite toys, creations made from sticks and string - all of these are fantastic talking points for class news and also show others in his class what he is interested in.
4.  Writing - on the first day he could only write his name, now everyday there is an opportunity to write.  Yesterday he made an easter card for his 2 x BFF and stuck a sealife shaped rubber band on the inside, and a 20c coin.  On the weekend he copied the words off the cereal box and everyday he wants to copy the name of his reader into his school diary.
5.  Independence - Hooray, now he understands what must happen every day to get ready for school.  The picture list has done it's job, but he is very impressed with himself that he no longer has to look at it.
6.  Holidays - he is excited that Easter is coming, but wants confirmation that we can arrange a couple of playdates with his BFF's, still read books, colour in and write words.

So now only has he learnt about the 3 R's, I think he 's learnt some lessons in life.  And I couldn't be prouder!!!

BFF Sleep Over Essentials

To anticipation of staying over your best friends house for the first time is just so exciting.  The planning involved, and the selection of the right items to take can last all week.  You know your friend from school, and during the day you have great fun.  Ýou've been over after school already so you feel comfortable since you've met her parents and even her little brother is not too annoying.  So now it's time to stay overnight.

Here's a list of things to take over:

- Pj's - choose a comfy two piece so you can play, hide, jump and wriggle easily.

- Toiletries. A toothbrush is a must as you can't have smelly breath on your first sleep over. And any medication you might need like an asthma inhaler. Don't forget your hair brush and ties to keep you looking good. You can put these in a cute make up bag or even a funky pencil case.

- Clothes for the next day.  If you are going straight from school, don't forget to pack some easy slip on shoes aswell as an outfit.  The Dance overnight bag will keep you organised or even a backpack will do.

- Swimmers.  If you are lucky enough to have a friend with a pool, don't forget your swimmers and goggles.

- Money.  take a small purse with some coins so you can buy yourself and your friend an icecream if you go out.

- Ipod.  You have to have some cool tunes to dance around too.

- Projector pen.  When the lights go out, you can beam lots of girly images onto the wall for a little fun.

With all these things you will be prepared for a great night in with your best friend.  Now you just have to plan when she is going to come to your house!!

Fantasy Tea Party anyone?

Remember the fantasy involved in a tea party? You’d invite your sister, your best friend or even just your toys. As the hostess you would gather the necessary supplies. Biscuits from the pantry if you were lucky or leaves and flowers from your garden would become gourmet treats thanks to a good imagination.

Your guests would sit in your playroom, where lots of chatting would be done in between nibbles and sips of cold tea, juice or water. I always remember being such a lady in this game, pretending to be much older than my preschool years. Of course, no lady would come to tea without the proper handbag, jewellery and borrowed high heels from Mum’s cupboard.

Today’s kids are lucky to have assistance from electronics to help them bake a virtual cake or dress a doll on their DS. But to see them engage with their friends, giggling as they pour the tea and creating their own world is something we should encourage.

These kinds of games also expose our kids to a world of varying careers. Their curiosity is triggered and so does their dream to turn into real life one day. Maybe this is the first step in creating the future cooks and restaurant owners. I say bring back the tea set, assemble the teddies and release your high heels!
